Living Shangri-La, the Shining Star in Vancouver`s Sky

The Living Shangri-La skyscraper is located in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. This architectural landmark is 197 meters, and 62 storeys which have made it the tallest tower in Vancouver, with over 45 meters high difference from the previous one, the Wall Centre.

This eye-catchy tower includes condo apartment units, a 5-star hotel, and multiple offices occupying different floors. The tower also contains a podium complex that has a spa, an Urban Fare, an art gallery for public display, and a curated sculpture garden.

According to a recently published list of the tallest buildings in Canada, Shangri-La is the 44th tallest building in the country. Developed by the well-known Westbank Projects and the Peterson Investment Group, this tower is one of the most high-end construction projects in Canada, with an estimated worth somewhere around $300 million plus.

A Close View from the Luxury Living Shangri-La

As mentioned before, the first 15 floors of the tower are occupied by the luxury Asian hotel chain, Shangri-La Hotel, which stands as the first North American outlet for this company.

Inspired by the legendary land of Lost Horizon, from James Hilton's popular novel, Shangri-La is a place for everyone who looks for top service. Shangri-La Hotel is renowned worldwide and has received global recognition for its one-of-a-kind hospitality.

With 119 suits and rooms, 1 restaurant, and 1 bar, Shangri-La Hotel sits at the heart of Vancouver's famous areas. You can take a walk to the nearby Robson Street for luxury boutiques and designer brands, enjoy the stunning nature of Vancouver and British Columbia at Stanley Park, or start an adventure in the city's nightlife on Granville Street – all within a walking distance from your room.

Here you can also hold big meetings and conferences, where you can achieve an event that is not only brilliant but also polished, and productive. Whether you plan to have a large-scale conference or you have a more private board meeting, a team of skilled event plan makers can help you turn your event into a dynamic affair.

Moreover, the Shangri-La Hotel has coved ceilings covered in silver leaf. As you step out of the elevator to the spa, you`ll be greeted by a shimmering waterfall, which is achieved by the amazing effect of water rippling down over granite. The hotel also has a private 42-seat movie theatre, which one can rent for private shows and screenings.

The remainder of the tower includes 300 luxury apartments, of which most have been sold to different companies, and individuals, at different prices ranging approximately from $400,000 to $16 million (according to the rumors) for one of the ultra-modern luxury penthouses.

Living Shangri-La from One Wall Centre

If you enjoy the opulence vibe of Vancouver's high-rise luxury buildings, then the Living Shangri-La is sure to satisfy your taste. The lobby is three storeys high, featuring 6 crystal chandeliers, rosewood paneling, and leather club chairs, along with limestone walls and floors.

There is a striking attention to detail here that can be noticed from the decoration of the lobby to the washrooms. Even the elevators have rosewood walls, limestone floors, and bronzed doors.

The idea was, as the tower`s architect, James Cheng, said to “understated” opulence, rather than a glitzy design. “We hope to do a sort of timeless, a Pacific Northwest kind of understated opulence, something that will look good 50 years from now,” said James Cheng.

Living in the luxury condos in Shangri-la not only do you have the view of charming Vancouver and its suburbs, but you can also enjoy the sunny sky on a foggy day. That's right, as one of the tallest buildings in Canada, this tower allows you to enjoy the scenery you won't get anywhere else in the city.

On top of that, the apartments have all the perks of a luxury high-rise: marble bathrooms, Sub-Zero fridges, Miele appliances, and even a built-in cappuccino maker. The living room, kitchen, and family room include one continuous space, which creates a fully spacious house, suitable for young couples looking for a place to expand their families.

That being said, the hotel rooms aren’t as large. However, they still feature the same marble bathrooms, rosewood paneling, and lavish furniture. The bathroom mirrors have small TV screens built into them, and each room has a safe, and a unique floor plan.

There are three penthouses in the Living Shangri-La, two of which have their own roof-top pools. So if you`re a swimmer, or you enjoy the feeling of the sun on your skin, these penthouses will surely bring you joy.

Additionally, to make sure that owners won't be bothered by high winds, the building`s architects have built large outdoor terraces protected by high glass “windscreens”.

Cheng, the tower`s architect, says his personal favorite condo is the one on the 51st floor. This apartment is a two-story, 4,500 square feet sky loft that is approximately at the height of former high-rise buildings in Vancouver. You can even spot this apartment from the ground since it juts out at the corner.

Construction of the Living Shangri-La

As you could imagine, the construction of a tower this magnificent has taken great time and resources. This high-end project required over 3 million hours of employment, around 15,000 truckloads of earth excavated 51,000 cubic meters of concrete, and 7,000 metric tons of steel.

During the peak of construction, approximately 1,000 workers were working on the site continually, building one floor per week. The tower set the city's record for the deepest excavation of 26 m, defeating the previous record of 23 m by the Wall Centre. The total cost of this project was nearly $350 million.

The only damage caused during the construction happened by a windstorm in January 2008, which led to loose construction material blowing off the site and into the streets. There were no injuries, however, parked vehicles were damaged. Furthermore, the Terasen Gas building, located near the Living Shangri-La was also damaged in the storm. During this accident, police had to close off West Georgia Street for the day.

The Location and Neighborhood

For everyone who needs easy access to downtown Vancouver, Living Shangri-La units are a great option. Besides the many perks of these condos, the building is located at 1128 West Georgia Street and 1111 Alberni Street, which has great access to Vancouver`s important buildings and shopping centers.
