The Construction Story

Similar to its exciting rooms, and amenities, Paradox Hotel Vancouver also has an interesting story to tell. In fact, in February 2009 buyers received a letter telling them the project was being canceled, which was a big shock. However, later that year, Holborn Group, the developer company, decided that they still would like to finish the project.

Finally, in August of the same year, it was officially declared that the project would certainly continue, but this time, probably even taller. The company continued the project in early 2010, as soon as the Winter Olympics finished.

That said, the drama was not over yet. As it appeared, up till August 2009, it wasn't certain if Ritz-Carlton's brand would still stay on the project as the hotelier. Eventually, the project was restored in 2011 announcing Ritz-Carlton won`t be associating. In the new project, the building was redesigned from 58 to 67 stories, with an added 2 floors of underground parking.

In 2012, construction work began, and by November, the foundation had been finished and substantial construction had started. It was in 2013 that Holborn president Joo Kim Tiah along with Donald Trump and his children held a local press conference and revealed the $360 million Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver.

The hotel complex and the 63-story condo opened in February 2017, with the attendance of Donald Jr. and developer Joo Kim Tiah. However, this opening was not met with enthusiasm, rather caused public protests and a boycott by Mayor Robertson and a few other local politicians. The tower included the hotel on the first 15 floors and 217 condos on the remaining.

And just when you thought the story was over, the hotel closed only three years and a half after its opening. This was mainly due to the impact of COVID-19 on its financial problems. That said, Trump TA Hotel Management was solely the operating subsidiary of the high-rise, while Holborn Properties owns the tower property. After the bankruptcy, owners removed the controversial “TRUMP'' branding, rebranding the building simply as “1151 Residences.”

Arthur Erickson, the Master Designer of Paradox Hotel Vancouver

Born on June 14, 1924, Arthur Charles Erickson was a famous Canadian architect, known for his modern designs in North America. He is probably Canada's most significant architect, and the first Canadian to win the AIA Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects.

Erickson's early works were mainly considered modernist or developed wooden structures as a response to their surrounding environment and climate. Light and water were two notable features of his designs, along with the distinctive horizontal components and balconies that were inspired by the vernacular architecture of the Far East. As experts say, his designs are a balance of modernist elements integrated with their context. Erickson always emphasized the significance of greenery and water in his works.

Some of his most significant works are Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, Robson Square in Vancouver, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, and Canadian Chancery in Washington.
